We recently went to the Kinsmen Beer Festival in Nanaimo. Being a Beer Fest newbie, I thought I’d let you know what to expect, tell you about my experience there, and share some upcoming beer fests. Continue reading “Try this: Attend a Local Craft Beer Fest”
Have you discovered the Extension Ridge trail system in the heart of Nanaimo yet? It’s beautiful, connects Nanaimo to Chase River (about 9.5 km away) and features The Abyss, a geological crack/earthquake fissure in the ground that everyone seems to have a different story about!
While it’s hard to actually confirm any of the stories you might hear about the Abyss or why it’s even there, it makes for a great reason to get out and explore this trail! Another bonus: this trail forms part of the Trans Canada Trail (aka. The Great Trail) so if you’re up for it, you can just keep walking all the way over to Nova Scotia if you wanted!

Honestly, I haven’t spent much time in Port Alberni so when my friend suggested a hike there, I had to hit the Google search. We were slightly pressed for time and had to make sure we picked up some Mexican for lunch (my own requirement!) and so, Roger Creek Park & Trail was a great choice! The idea was that we could walk to the back side of the Hole in the Wall, a well-known but very quick walk in Port Alberni. Heading to the Roger Creek Trail would give us a longer trip, show us a new side of that beloved stop, and still give us enough time for lunch! The park was easy to find; it’s right off the highway and has a parking lot with signage. This park also has a large network of trails so I snapped a picture of the map at the trail head (this ended up being a good idea). Continue reading “Park Guide: Roger Creek Park & Trail”
Tucked away in a corner on Hornby Island, you’ll find Helliwell Provincial Park. Featuring lovely walking trails, beach access, a sea lion colony on the close islet, at least two million eagles (I lost count but I’m sure the number is right around there!), mighty cliffs, and a forest equally full of both evergreens and blossoming trees, this is a special park that you’ll visit time and time again whenever you are on Hornby!
I headed to the park recently when I went to Hornby to take in the inaugural Hornby Island Film Fest. Between films, I made sure to visit a couple of my favourite spots as well as check out new ones! In my 30 hours on Hornby, I saw three films, walked on Tribune Bay Beach, explored Grassy Point Park, discovered Sandpiper Beach, and walked around Helliwell Park. Mexican food — I’m obsessed! I have cookbooks, have taken a class, watch YouTube videos, trade recipes and I even have it on my vision boards. I LOVE Mexican food. I love the pride Mexican restaurants have in their food. They make their food from scratch, the atmosphere is fun and colourful, and it was so hard to pick only ten. We did our best though and here’s our list of the Top Ten Taco Tuesday places on the Island!
