Just a short ferry ride away from Port McNeill is Malcolm Island. Having never been here we did some research before arriving. It was built by Finnish settlers who wanted the community to be a utopia—a place where everything is perfect. While that didn’t quite work out as planned, there is certainly a strong sense of community, neighbours helping one another, and people working together for the greater good of the island. Also, with every Gulf Island comes two things: a laid-back island feel and a totally unique culture that is simultaneously both like and unlike the other Gulf Islands.

Recently, we packed up the Jeep and ventured north, paddleboards and all! Since we started the blog, we’ve heard from a lot of people that we should go check out the Mount Waddington area of the island, in and around Port McNeill and Port Hardy. Turns out we know quite a few people who grew up in the area and they all gave us a bucket list of places to check out!
As a kid, I used to venture through Port Hardy in the summer as I caught the ferry to Prince Rupert with my family. Other than passing through in those times, I can’t remember spending much time in the North Island area otherwise.
Since we had limited experience with what to see and do in the North Island area, all the recommendations we got from our friends helped us discover that the area is FULL of stuff to do and things to see.
